Lyrics
Naked to the Truth
(C) 1984 Michael R. J. Roth
Not every dove knows where to land,
not every neighbor lends a hand,
not every member of a chain gang sings the blues, not every beggar gets a handout,
not every work of art can stand out,
not every man who dies at night
can see the moon.
Not every soldier is a hunter,
not every prisoner a runner,
not every worn and weary hero makes the news, not every battle can be won,
not every landed blow will stun,
not every bullet gone astray
was aimed at you.
And as you try to walk between the shifting seasons, in a life that is more fragile than the dew,
just remember God will strip you of your reasons till you're naked to the truth he shines on you.
Not every passerby looks twice
into the victim's eyes,
not every baggy-eyed detective finds a clue, not every mark accepts his fate,
not every scapegoat learns to hate,
not every stranger on the corner waits for you.
Not every treasure can be shared, not every feeling can be bared, not every lover in your life
had love for you,
and though you dream it till you die, sometimes a dream is just a lie. Not every broken heart would mend if it were true.
(Chorus)
